US and European stock exchanges closed with growth on the Fed chief’s speech

Key U.S. and European stock indices reacted with growth to the speech of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, held last Friday. The Dow Jones gained 0.73% at the close, the S&P 500 - 0.67%, NASDAQ - 0.94%. German DAX and British FTSE 100 added 0.07% each, French CAC 40 - 0.21%.

Powell said that the Fed intends to continue to fight inflation in the United States, the level of which, according to him, is still too high, and if necessary, resort to further increases in the key rate to achieve this goal. Such a statement in itself is unfavorable for the stock market, but investors were encouraged by the caution with which the head of the Fed talked about raising. According to analyst of Pantheon Macroeconomics Ian Shepherdson, quoted by France-Presse, he clearly indicated that he does not intend to take risks to achieve inflation targets - the rate will be raised only if such a step is necessary, but it may not happen.
