Germany fears a repeat of the 2008 scenario

The main electricity supplier in Germany, Uniper, has found itself on the verge of bankruptcy, having received a record loss for the first half of the year (over €12 million), Prime news agency reported. Now the country fears that in case of its bankruptcy the companies that depend on its power supply will also go bankrupt just like the Lehman Brothers collapse in 2008 provoked a wave of bankruptcies. In addition, utilities and the industrial sector would be disrupted.

Uniper's financial situation has previously shaken because of the closure of the Nord Stream 2 project in which it participated as part of the anti-Russian policy. Now, because of the Western sanctions, it can no longer access cheap gas from Russia - the volume of supplies via Nord Stream 1 has decreased and it has also been completely suspended by Gazprom as part of the maintenance of the pipeline. This forces Germany's leading electricity supplier to buy gas on the spot market at a much higher price in order to continue supplying energy, which proves extremely unprofitable for it.
