Electricity shortage during abnormally hot summer may lead to humanitarian disaster and economic turmoil in different countries – experts

Power shortages around the world, spurred on by anti-Russian sanctions imposed by Western countries, threaten to worsen this summer, when more heat is expected amid climate change. The difficulties are likely not only in Europe, but also in other regions of the planet - they have already manifested themselves in the United States, Asia and Africa, which have faced forced blackouts. In summer period electricity consumption increases due to operation of air conditioners, but its scarcity and high cost will jeopardize well-being and health of the population, as well as operation of businesses. Due to blackouts this summer may be fatal, Bloomberg forecasts. Stoppage of production may provoke economic shocks. According to Henning Gloestein, director at Eurasia Group, severe power outages combined with the damage previously caused by the pandemic, worsened problems with supplies and food shortages around the world can cause a humanitarian crisis. He noted that this year's power and food shortages are the highest on record in decades.
